This work is being written for believers first, believers with a heart for, and healthy fear of our sovereign God, the Creator of all things—It is my prayer it will also reach non-believers and be a seed in fertile ground leading to a harvest for our Lord and Savior.
We all know the story of Sodom and Gomorrah—Two cities destroyed for their gross sexual immorality and murder. No passage of Scripture more fully exemplifies this truth than the following.
“And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly”— Genesis 19:1-7
The men of Sodom were so besotted by sexual sin, they had no regard for the ancient laws of hospitality. No, these men were driven only by their desire to have sexual relations with the two strangers Lot made welcome in his home. They were even willing to use force as verse 9 records.
“And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.”
The men of Sodom resented Lot, who was a stranger in the city, not a native, trying to judge them for their proclivities. Sexual immorality was normalized in Sodom—Now. you may have noticed I omitted verse 8 in this passage. I will return to it in due time, but first a few words on this besieged fellow Lot.
Lot was the close cousin of Abraham, they were like brothers. Both Lot and Abraham traveled together and both had great wealth in goods and livestock. Lot was a good man and they both decided, to avoid the strife, which had built up between their herdsman, it would be best if they split up.
Lot chose to go towards the Jordan Valley on the outskirts of Sodom. There he pitched his tents and prospered—Due to much warfare between several of the local kings which Abraham and his men dealt with. Lot at some point is lured by the comfort and security of Sodom and moves into the city.
His wife and daughters enjoyed big city life, one or more of his daughters married local men, embracing the culture. Sin is always seductive, yet Lot himself never participated in the sin of the Metropolis. Yet it did wear him down.
The sin of Sodom was so perverse, it reached a point which God could no longer suffer to exist. “And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous; I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.” Genesis 18:20,21
Knowing his beloved brother Lot dwelt in Sodom, Abraham pleads God’s mercy on behalf of the city, bold bargaining ensues between Abraham and the Lord, ending with a promise from God to spare Lot and his family. Which brings us back to one of the most shocking revelations in all of Scripture in my estimation, preserved in verse 8 of chapter 19—Surely one of the most controversial.
“Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.”
Lot offers his last two virginal daughters to the wicked mob threatening to rape the angels under his protection. What to think of this? Is this a sign of how far Lot has fallen while under the influence of the city? Is it a sign of how much he fears God, showing he is willing to sacrifice his daughters to save the angels?
Well, if it is the latter, Lot has missed the mark as we read Proverbs 17:15; “Acquitting the guilty and condemning the righteous—both are detestable to the LORD.” And Romans 3:8; “And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.”
The withering effect of being in constant contact with immorality, and normalizing sinful behavior is further illuminated by the behavior of Lot’s wife. The household was warned not to look back as they fled the judgement raining down on the two cities… “But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.” v26
So strong was the allure of sin, she could not keep herself from looking back at the city she lived so sumptuously in, so comfortable with sin, she longed for the corrupt city, now judged by the Holy God Abraham served. The error of the actions of Lot’s wife leads to further sins, which escalate to the condemnation of whole peoples as we shall find out next.
It is then chronicled, the two remaining daughters of Lot, upon the death of their mother, fear him having no male heir, Lot’s name will die with him—They concoct a plan to get their father drunk and sleep with him to create sons for him. This they do, the eldest first and then the younger.
“Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. And the firstborn bear a son, and called his name Moab: the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day. And the younger, she also bare a son, and called his name Benammi: the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.” v36-38
Where do you think the onerous sin the daughters of Lot committed by getting their father pass out drunk and incestuously bering sons was learned from? Scripture tells us in II Peter 2: And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;
And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked:
(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) v6-8
We now know where it lead—The birth of two of the most obscene nations remembered in Scripture, the Moabites and the Ammonites. Chief among their sins was the practice of sexual promiscuity and immorality as practiced by their mothers the daughters of Lot—Which lead to them worshipping gods requiring they sacrifice the babies made in the pursuit of sexual pleasure.
Perverting the beautiful God created intent of sexual relations between man and wife—The opportunity to participate in God’s creative will expressed through childbirth. Rebelling against the first command of God to man; "Be fruitful, and multiply,”
Homosexuality and abortion are two of the chief weapons employed by the enemy of all mankind. Solely devised to keep us from bearing fruit and multiplying—Calling all love good love and the destruction of life in a mother’s womb a choice preserved for the mother is a deception keeping us from fulfilling God’s will for us.
II Peter further elucidates God’s displeasure with this sort of behavior v9-10 The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities. (We can have a whole other writing on the second half of these verses.) Lets move on…
This is why those who call themselves believers in Christ while advocating for women having the right to choose killing their children in the womb do not respond when you point out verses like Psalm 139:13, Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 44:24, Job 10:8-12 and most importantly Genesis 1:27 “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” Until you are blue in the face.
You can say you believe in God, yet this is of no effect if you do not first have a Godly fear of Him and actually believe what He says. You demonstrate your lack of fear and belief when you normalize and co-sign what God calls abominable behavior. You also evince a lack of true love for your fellow man when you fear cultural rejection more than telling people the truth. The wages of sin is death. This is precisely what we learned from the example of Lot and his daughters.
v12-15 But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption;
And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time. Spots they are and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings while they feast with you;
Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin; beguiling unstable souls: an heart they have exercised with covetous practices; cursed children:
Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Bosor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;
When a person can’t honestly answer the question “What is a woman?’ For fear of losing political support or acceptance with the crowd, you fear men and not God. There is no greater misplaced fear you can have. “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Matthew10:28
When you chant “my body, my choice,” or, “All love is good love,” and the like, you are not being kind—You are being indifferent at best and doing evil at worst. We all have to decide whom it is we will serve in this life, the world, or the Creator of the world.
We kill our children today just like the Baal worshippers of the past. Our modern children are killed in the womb to erase the consequences of our promiscuity, our immorality—They are no less a sacrifice to pleasure in the service of self.
Christ loves you, He hates our sin—It is sin which separates us from Him. Yet He did not abandon us to our sins, he made a way to reconcile us to Him. It requires faith and obedience. The Lord taught us far more about the wages of sin and hell than heaven. Narrow is the gate to heaven and broad is the way to damnation and it is often paved as the bromide asserts, with good intentions.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12
